Society for the Anthropology of Work Annual Report 2003
I. SAW membership has remained around 300 members for the past several years, and this year was no exception. Financial balances, however, continue to improve incrementally as a membership dues increase three years ago continues to pay dividends. Printing cost savings realized through the cooperation of the AAA office have helped keep the Anthropology of Work Review well within budget.
The 2003 meetings at the AAA saw an increase in SAW reviewed panels, some six in all. The organization was also fortunate to award the Arensberg prize to Helen Safa, an eminent researcher in the field of women, work, and development. SAW did a special outreach in support of graduate students in the anthropology of work, sponsoring a panel and wine and cheese get together focussed on the mechanics of getting academic jobs.
Also important was the reorganization and amplification of the SAW website executed through the diligence of Eve Hochwald and Sam Collins.
II. Planning
The SAW Board has agreed to enlarge within carefully watched fiscal
boundaries the page numbers of upcoming issues of the Anthropology of
Work Review. In addition, it seeks to assure a student-directed and
oriented event be scheduled by SAW at every AAA Annual Meeting.
No recommendations for the AAA are proposed at this time.
