Founded in 1995, the Anthropology and Environment Section fosters research and communication on issues relating to the interface between culture and the environment. Its members--who include anthropology students of all levels, university professors, applied/practicing anthropologists, activists and senior anthropologists--work in both the United States and internationally and are united by their common interest in ecology, the environment and evironmentalism.
The A&E section operates a highly active listserv which serves as an online tool for knowledge exchanges and lively debates on topics in ecology and environmental anthropology. A&E listserv exchanges frequently include discussions of recent news articles, reference and link exchanges, and other fruitful conversations on relevant topics--such as climate change, sustainable development, alternative energy solutions, and challenges to the conservation of biodiversity. The listserv is a valuable resource open to anyone with an interest in ecology and the environment. Archives of the listserv dating back to 1998 are housed at the University of Georgia and can be accessed at http://www.listserv.uga.edu/archives/eanth-l.html.
Recently, the section has launched a Small Grants Program to foster collaboration among academic and practicing anthropologists, grassroots activists, and/or organizations and to inspire innovative solutions to environmental issues. The program will sponsor projects that address local, national or global concerns, issues, or problems.
