Assistant Professor (Tenure Track)

Position Summary: The Department of Anthropology at California State University, Fresno seeks to hire a cultural anthropologist with research interests in health and the environment and an applied/practicing orientation. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and offer BA-level courses in Cultural Anthropology, including the candidate’s teaching and research expertise. Other responsibilities will include research, publication, and other scholarly activities, as well as advising and mentoring students and engaging in service at all levels of the university. Specific assignments will depend on department needs. The successful candidate may be called upon to teach in a distance-learning mode and encouraged to develop web enhanced and/or web-based instruction. Outcomes assessment and service learning are important components of the university curriculum. Faculty members are also expected to engage in service activities at all levels of the university and provide academic and professional advice to students. The successful candidate will be expected to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and administration. The successful applicant will join a multidisciplinary Physical, Psychological and Environmental Health cohort of faculty. The research and professional activities of this cohort will focus on evaluating and responding to the causes of the chronic conditions that affect the physical and emotional health of the Central Valley’s children and adults. Cohort members will help frame a regional agenda that will include psychosocial and emotional health, social behaviors, childhood obesity, and family nutrition, all of which have been identified as serious problems in our region.

Overview: The Department of Anthropology emphasizes a four field, applied approach to undergraduate education with a strong tradition of mentoring students and involving them in faculty research.

Required Education: An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Anthropology by the time of appointment in August, 2014, is required.

Required Experience: Candidates are required to demonstrate a record of research in health and the environment with an applied/practicing orientation. The successful candidate must show a strong foundation of a career-long research agenda as demonstrated by at least one sole-authored research paper presented at a professional conference. The successful candidate must have the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications: We prefer a candidate with teaching experience at the university level and a record of teaching excellence. We prefer candidates who can demonstrate a record of, or potential for, developing grant proposals and attracting external funding, as well as active participation or leadership roles in professional organizations. We prefer candidates whose research informs the development of government policy; quantitative research and analysis skills are also desirable.
