Anthro & Educ Quarterly

Anthropology & Education Quarterly
is the journal of the Council on Anthropology and Education, a professional association of anthropologists and educational researchers which is a Section of the American Anthropological Association that meets at the Annual Meeting of the AAA association.

Anthropology & Education Quarterly is a peer-reviewed journal that publishes scholarship on schooling in social and cultural context and on human learning both inside and outside of schools. Articles rely primarily on ethnographic research to address immediate problems of practice as well as broad theoretical questions. AEQ also publishes on the teaching of anthropology.

The most recent AEQ 2006 Annual Report is now available.

Last year's AEQ 2005 Annual Report is also available.

Send inquiries on book reviews to Tifani Jones, Book Review Editor, at the above address.

All manuscripts must be submitted electronically through AEQ's Editorial Workflow System at http://services.bepress.com/aeq. Manuscripts received through regular mail will be returned for electronic submission. Manuscripts not blinded or formatted according to AAA/AEQ style will be returned.

Manuscripts are accepted for review under the following conditions:
  • The manuscript (formatted as a Word document and blinded for anonymous peer review) should be no more than 35 pages in length (or, for Relections from the Field or Reflections on the Field, 10-15 pages), with one-inch margins on all and any tables or figures; all text should be in 12-point Times New Roman font. All elements of the manuscript (abstract, block quotes, endnotes, references, etc.) must be double spaced. The right margin should not be justified. Pages should be numbered consecutively, including endnotes, references cited, tables, and figures.
  • The same work has not been and will not be published elsewhere nor is presently submitted elsewhere, include translations. All persons listed as authors have given their approval for the submission of the article. Copies of letters granting permission to reproduce illustrations, tables, or lengthy quoted passages should be be included with the manuscript.
  • All author-identifying information in the body of the text, endnotes, and references must be removed.
  • Each manuscript submitted should include an abstract of 75 words and 4-5 key words.
  • The first page should contain the article title, and a short form of the title as a suggested running head (fewer than 45 characters including spaces and letters).
  • Ordinarily the past tense rather than the "ethnographic present" is more approriate for describing past fieldwork. It is perfectly accepteble to use first-person pronouns.
  • References cited should begin on a separate page following the endnotes. All references must be cited in text or notes. References cited must follow AAA style, as exemplified in this journal and listed on the AAA Website, http://www.aaanet.org/pubs/styleguide.htm
  • The manuscript should be written according to AAA style guidelines. For punctuation, abbreviations, grammar, compounding, and other matter of style, consult the Chicago Manual of Style (14th edition, University of Chicago Press, 1993); for spelling and hyphenation, consult Webster's Collegiate Dictionary (10th edition, 1993).
  • Table and figures should be completely understandable independent of the text. Each table and figure must be cited in the text, given a title or caption, and consecutively numbered with Arabic numerals. Tables and figures shold be included at the end of the manuscript following the references cited.
  • Endnotes are discouraged and should be limited or eliminated.
