Critical Intersections/Dangerous Issues

Message from Perry Gilmore, Program Chair, 2006

The CAE program was very exciting this year. CAE received a large number of excellent proposals this year, including 28 individual paper/poster proposals and 35 session proposals. We were able to create four additional sessions using individual paper submissions. This year our AAA acceptance reate was exceptionally high with 100% of paper/posters and 99% for the sessions.

As we did last year, we invited the general membership to volunteer as reviewers and we had an excellent response. A total of 49 members reviewed this year's proposals. We appreciate their generosity and commitment. Twenty-seven CAE members and 22 Board members also volunteered as reviewers. All proposals were reviewed by at least one Board member in addition to the CAE volunteers. Where there were strong differences in the evaluations, the proposals were evaluated by additional reviewers. Reviewers rated paper, poster and session proposal abstracts on the quality of the research, clarity of writing, significance of the study, contribution to anthropology and education, and contribution to positive social/educational change.

Graduate Student Forum
The Graduate Student Forum, held every year at the Annual Meeting Conference, was on Friday, November 21, 2003, from 12:15 to 1:30 pm in Boulevard Room A. The topic this year was professional development and publishing student work. There was a panel which included Herve Varenne (Teachers College, Columbia University), Bradley Levinson (Indiana), and Theresa McCarty (AEQ editor, University of Arizona). There was also time for questions. People who had items that they wanted the panelists to address emailed them to Brinton who passed them along to the panelists.

Meeting topics were solicited from graduate students. Students at any stage of their graduate career are encouraged to contact Brinton Ramsey, the graduate student representative to the CAE Board of Directors, with ideas or suggestions.
New Scholar Travel Stipends
To broaden participation in its activities and annual meetings, the Council on Anthropology of Education awards several stipends of $333 to new scholars (graduate student or recent graduate) from groups underrepresented in the council who are selected to present a CAE-sponsored paper or poster. The stipends are intended to help defray expenses associated with participating in the annual meetings. Individuals are eligible only once to receive the stipend, and first-time presenters will receive priority. Five stipends will be awarded this year. For more info, go to Travel Stipends.
