Resources for Graduate Students

The Council on Anthropology and Education is committed to providing graduate students with opportunities to become involved in the section. All students are invited to contact us to find out more information. The current student co-representatives in CAE are Chiara Cannella from the University of Arizona (cannella@u.arizona.edu), and Amina Tawasil (aut2101@columbia.edu), from Columbia University.

Involvement with Standing Committees

A great way for students to become involved is through the Standing Committees, which provide an avenue for networking and collaboration among colleagues who share similar interests. If you are interested in finding out more about the work of CAE and its committees, please review the topics of the Standing Committees section, and contact one of its chairs and/or the CAE president, who will be happy to help identify ways for you to become involved.

Student Events at the Annual AAA Meeting

CAE holds two events at the AAA Annual Meetings intended specifically for students: the Students of Color Mentoring Event and the Graduate Student Forum.

CAE Graduate Student Forum

The CAE Graduate Student Forum is a panel discussion held annually at the AAA meetings on a topic of interest to graduate students. This event is designed to allow for informal discussion among graduate students and scholars that students can apply in their own work and studies.

Each year, the Forum centers on a different topic, and several more experienced scholars serve as panelists for students’ questions and open discussion. The Forum provides opportunities for students to gain support through networking and mentorship opportunities, and to share resources and experiences with other students. It is also a place for building community among the next generation of active CAE members and for connecting graduate student members to the larger CAE community. The topic of the Forum changes each year; past topics have included: ethical considerations in research; action and participatory research models; funding; and the process of publishing.

CAE Graduate Students of Color Mentoring Program

The Mentoring Program provides opportunities for Anthropology and Education students of color population to access highly supportive mentorship efforts with professors across the United States. Topics covered in this mentorship include funding, grants, mentor/mentee relationships, and publication/dissertation writing support. Aside from mentoring, the CAE Graduate Students of Color Mentoring Program provides students with an updated guidebook of previous meetings.

2009 CAE GRADUATE STUDENTS OF COLOR MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
Session Sponsor: CAE, ALLA
Session Date/Time: Fri., 12.05.09, 12:15 PM-1:30 PM
Location: Room 413, 4th Floor

We would like to invite you to this year's Graduate Students of Color Mentoring Program, co-sponsored by ALLA, in this year's AAA meetings in Philadelphia will take place Friday, December 5, 2009 from 12:15 PM-1:30 PM in Room 413, 4th Floor. This year’s session topic of interest will be “The Care and Keeping of Our Advisors”. As a student, we would ask you to participate in an informal lunch at the AAA's 108th Annual Meeting will be held in Philadelphia, PA December 2-6, 2009 at the Philadelphia Marriot Downtown (View Preliminary Program here).

This meeting will hopefully provide students the opportunity to meet with at least three mentors based on similar research and professional interests. After this initial meeting, you will then be able to contact mentors outside their departments and/or universities.

We are very excited about what this program has to offer students in order to further the CAE mission of promoting diversity and social justice within the organization.

Please email Amina Tawasil (aut2101@columbia.edu), or Aide Acosta (acosta1@uiuc.edu) if you would like to participate in this program. If you know of any students of anthropology who would be interested in joining us, please feel free to forward this message to them.

We would greatly appreciate your participation and look forward to providing you and other students with the kind of support they will need to become the next generation of CAE scholars and researchers.

A Facebook group founded by the Council on Anthropology and Education has been created to serve the Anthropology and Education students of color population. If you are a Facebook member, search for the CAE Graduate Students of Color Mentoring Program within Facebook groups, and you will be able to join!
