If we are angling to identify ourselves solely to ourselves, then I would agree that I like the ecumenical spirit of "Soyuz" and what it first conjured. It recognizes the best of what socialist internationalism was after without (at least for myself) limited us to specific areas.

I don't mind overlapping with other AAA sections (so many do already) and have been more of a fan of "Eurasia" than some.

Were we to follow the pattern of almost all the institutions where our members have studies, it would be "Russian and Eurasian Studies." This would surely offend some in our circle, but it would make us most recognizable to outsiders, which seems to me to be the key worthwhile goal of this exercise.

SaPS, I confess, makes me smile in good ways.

Next most recognizable: "Socialist Worlds," which is effectively what brings us altogether, even if, as has been noted, most who live in these world areas no longer self-identify that way.

For myself: some variant of Eurasia would be most strategic, while Socialist Worlds is most true. Soyuz remains poetic, and could well remain the name of our working group amongst ourselves. But if the switch to section status merits anyone's attention, it should most easily and most effectively draw attention to why we contribute something valuable, and why universities should want to hire our new Ph.Ds.
