Soyuz is considering applying for AAA section status. This forum is open for discussion of broader issues related to applying for AAA section status.

The Section Assembly Executive Committee (SAEC)of the AAA has responded to our initial inquiry about applying for Section status with the following questions:

1) How is your Interest Group different than geographically focused sections such as the Society of East Asian Anthropology, or topically focused sections like the Association of Political and Legal Anthropology? The committee saw potential overlap (a potential strike against us) and would like to have you further differentiate between your group and these existing Sections.

2) They also would like to know specifically in what respects your current role as an Interest Group is unsatisfactory or no longer meets your needs. As the services available to Interest Groups have changed in the last few years and we want to make sure you are fully aware of what is available to you as an Interest Group.

I am seeking responses to these questions from Soyuz members. Your responses will help determine whether we will go ahead with the application and the direction we propose for the Section. Please post your input here or to H-Soyuz.

Especially if we change the name, the difference is obvious as compared with SEAA or APLA: we are not geographically bounded and we examine processes that both start from a specific social formation, conceptually, and implicitly contain a critique of contemporary capitalisms, analytically.

Re point 2, I'm not 100% persuaded that Interest Group status is not adequate. We already have our publication. I guess it would be nice to be able to sponsor a session.

Ditto to that. The difference with pre-existing groups is obvious. But the need for becoming a section is not.

For myself, I always appreciate that in-person meetings might be easier forums for these kinds of discussions, and perhaps the need for those will mean this conversations will continue for a bit. But I do think that there is significant gain to acquiring AAA section-status.

Most simply put: While our field might appear robust to ourselves, many don't recognize who we are or quite what brings us together. Outside our traditional area-studies powerhouse disciplines of history and literature, it is the exceptional job ad that invites applications expressly from the former socialist world. This means what while all of us can see excellent work being done, it is not very rapidly translating into departments that think, "We really need one of those people."

It seems to me that converting from "interest-group status" at the AAA (which has never, I hope, excluded non-anthropologists before, as we are also an affiliate at ASEEES, and should continue to seek whatever outlets we can find to promote our mixed belongings) to "section status" is a low-cost way for us to easily gain greater recognition for what we do, and promote a new generation of scholars along the way. We already do most of what a section does. We already have the same officers that a section does. The single down-side that I understand from the AAA is that, legally, we would have to charge a membership fee, but that can be as low as $1 a year and would apply only to those who already belong to the AAA. Beyond that, the only cost is the effort of the paperwork.

Along the way, I also hope that the kinds of conversations we are continuing as field-based scholars of socialist and postsocialist worlds will equally find heightened status in other discipline-based associations.

For this to be effective, however, we need to send the right message with the right name. That's the harder part! (and another forum, I see).
